  • This full-day tour from Santiago explores Cajón del Maipo, a mountain valley in the Andes southeast of the city, with four stops: Plaza de San José de Maipo, El Yeso Reservoir, Laguna del Encañado, and Casa Chocolate. Round-trip transfer, a bilingual guide, an outdoor brunch, and a sweet snack are included.

    The experience

    Plaza de San José de Maipo: the main town of Cajón del Maipo, founded in 1792 by order of Ambrosio O'Higgins, Governor of Chile and later Viceroy of Peru. Its parish church, built in 1854, is a National Monument.

    El Yeso Reservoir: one of Santiago's main drinking water reserves, fed by the Yeso River and Andean snowmelt. Its turquoise water, framed by mountain peaks, makes it one of the most photographed spots in Cajón del Maipo. You'll have time to walk along the shore and take photos.

    Laguna del Encañado: an easy hike leads to this lagoon, also known as Laguna Escondida, set in a U-shaped glacial valley with streams and native vegetation. Condors can sometimes be seen on the surrounding peaks. An outdoor brunch is served by the lagoon: coffee, hot chocolate, sandwiches, cakes, and juices.

    Casa Chocolate: a handmade building by artisan Sergio Andrade, built with bio-construction techniques, native wood, and recycled materials. Its fairytale architecture makes it one of the most unusual places in the valley. A sweet snack with hot chocolate, tea, or coffee is included.

    Travelers who want to see the Andes close to Santiago in one day, nature and landscape photographers, and anyone looking for a mountain day with meals and logistics already organized.

    Practical information

    The tour lasts approximately 10 hours, departing Santiago at 8:30 AM and returning around 6:30 PM. The route goes above 2,500 meters, so bring warm layers, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. Due to the altitude and uneven terrain, the tour is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Lunch is not included.
