What you can expect
Meet your guide at the scheduled time and begin exploring Bukhara’s old town. Visit the Lyabi-Hauz Ensemble, a lively square with madrasahs, khanaka, and the historic pool at the heart of old Bukhara.
Continue to the Sayfuddin Caravanserai, an example of a compact caravanserai, and Toki Sarrafon, an old trading dome once famous for money changers. Next, visit the Magoki-Attori Mosque, one of Bukhara’s oldest mosques, now home to the Carpet Museum.
Explore Toki Telpakfurushon, the largest covered bazaar, once a hub for hat and skullcap sellers, and Abdullakhan Tim, an elegant domed bazaar built for silk trading. Admire the richly decorated Abdulazizkhan Madrasah, with colorful mosaics and carved details.
See the Ulugbek Madrasah, one of the city’s oldest Islamic schools, built by the great astronomer, and Toki Zargaron, a trading dome where jewelers once worked and sold their crafts. Admire the Kalyan Minaret, the iconic 12th-century tower, symbol of Bukhara, and the Kalyan Mosque, a massive Friday mosque with space for 10,000 worshippers.
Visit the Miri Arab Madrasah, an active Islamic school opposite the mosque, and pass by the Ark Fortress, the ancient citadel of Bukhara’s rulers. Nowadays, it is used as a Bukhara State Museum. The Ark Fortress is shown only from the outside, since visiting its museum sections would add an extra 1–1.5 hours.
End your tour with a visit to the Bolo-Hauz Mosque, famous for its wooden pillars reflected in the pool, the Chashma-Ayyub Mausoleum, “Job’s Spring,” linked to a local legend of Prophet Job, and the Ismail Samani Mausoleum, a masterpiece of 10th-century architecture, the oldest in Bukhara.
