What you can expect

  • Your combined admission gives you access to both UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Northern Tasmania, the 2.8km Convict Farm Walk between them, the suspension bridge over the Macquarie River and Unshackled: The Assignment Story Exhibition at Woolmers Estate.

Woolmers Estate - Est. 1817 (Open Daily)
Woolmers tells two intertwined stories: six generations of the Archer family, and the convict men and women whose labour built the estate. Eighteen original buildings still stand across 13 hectares, from the grand homestead with the family’s contents still in place to the two-storey shearing shed, where convict graffiti still marks the walls. Wander the 1840s Walled Garden and the expansive Rose Garden, home to over 3,000 roses, then discover how convicts gained skills, earned freedom and often chose to stay in Unshackled: The Assignment Story Exhibition. Enjoy lunch at the Rose Garden Café or Devonshire tea in the 1847 Servants’ Kitchen.

Convict Farm Walk & Suspension Bridge
The Convict Farm Walk follows the Macquarie River between both properties, covering the same ground assigned convicts walked between the two estates.

Brickendon Estate - Est. 1824 (Open Tuesday - Sunday)
Behind English hedgerows planted by convicts more than 200 years ago, Brickendon is still farmed by seventh-generation Archer descendants. Meet the farm animals at the daily 10:15am feeding, then explore the 1820s Farm Village, where more than 20 convict-built buildings still stand, including a Gothic chapel with its original pews and Sussex barns with hand-hewn beams. Walk four hectares of heritage gardens beneath English oaks and elms planted 180 years ago.

Together the two estates are the most complete surviving picture of the Assignment System in colonial Tasmania and one of the most rewarding historic day trips from Launceston on offer in the state.

Please note Brickendon is closed on Mondays but your ticket allows entry for two days so you are able to visit on Tuesday.
