Wat Mahathat is believed to be one of Ayutthaya's oldest temples. The temple include remains of important old buildings such as pagodas, octagonal pagodas, royal hall, small temples, and the famous sand-stone Ayutthaya-style head of the Buddha image in a tree's root. Wat Phra Sri Sanphet was the most important temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom, located inside the compound of the Grand Palace.
