November Notice:
As most of the show is usually non-verbal, please note that on some occasions in November, the show may include a brief, few-minute comedy segment in Japanese as an intermission.

Step into the world of local Japanese entertainment at Asakusa Mokubakan, where history, music, and drama come alive on stage. Get ready to immerse yourself and experience a side of Japan that you may not encounter elsewhere. Located in the heart of Asakusa, this small local theater has been delighting audiences for over a century with its dynamic performances.

Enjoy a show where elements of traditional Japanese dance and modern performance come together, and see performers in eye-catching costumes, including onnagata (meaning, “female role”).

Originally founded in the Meiji era, our theater survived wars and became the last remaining Taishū Engeki theater in Tokyo. Today, it continues its legacy as a beloved home of Taishū Engeki, offering visitors a rare chance to experience a living cultural tradition.

Taishū Engeki is performed by traveling actor troupes who often train from a young age and live together like family. Their passion shines through in every performance, creating shows filled with emotion, humor, and heart.

One of the theater’s greatest charms is its intimate atmosphere. During performances, performers often come down from the stage and walk among the audience, creating opportunities to interact and connect with guests.

With new performances every day, every visit offers something fresh and unexpected. You might see graceful fan dances, thrilling swordplay, traditional Japanese dance, dramatic scenes, comedy, or something else entirely.

Whether it’s your first time in Japan or your tenth, Asakusa Mokubakan offers a unique cultural experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Performance Schedule November (2 shows every day):

･2nd Show: Explanation (Guided Tickets) starts 7:00 pm / Show starts at ~7:30 pm

• One of the unique aspects of Taishū Engeki is that the performance changes completely each day, so the show itself may occasionally start up to 15 minutes earlier or later.

During the waiting time:
A snack bar is available offering small snacks and refreshments (cash only). Eating and drinking during the show is perfectly fine in Taishū Engeki, so feel free to enjoy a snack during the performance. This is also a good time to take a quick toilet break.
