What you can expect

The morning begins in Moshi (or Arusha), where the crisp air carries the promise of adventure. After breakfast, you set off from your accommodation, the road winding gently through fertile hillsides until you arrive at Materuni Village. Your guide greets you warmly, offering a brief introduction to the area—its people, culture, and traditions—before leading you deeper into this charming Chagga settlement.

From the village, the journey continues on foot. The hike to Materuni Waterfalls takes you through lush landscapes alive with tropical flora, banana plantations, and coffee fields. The trail is scenic and invigorating, lasting between one to two hours depending on your pace. As you approach, the sound of rushing water grows louder until the magnificent waterfall reveals itself, cascading dramatically into a natural pool below. You pause to take photos, breathe in the serenity, and perhaps dip into the cool, refreshing waters for a swim.

Afterward, the experience shifts from nature to culture. You join the villagers for a coffee tour, where you learn the entire process of coffee-making—from picking ripe beans to roasting them over a fire. The atmosphere is filled with laughter and song, as the locals sing traditional Chagga melodies while you grind and brew your own cup. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee fills the air, and sipping it feels like tasting the spirit of Materuni itself.

With appetites awakened, you sit down to a traditional meal prepared by the villagers. The dishes, crafted from fresh local ingredients, showcase the richness of Chagga cuisine—simple yet flavorful, hearty yet comforting. Sharing food in this communal setting deepens the sense of connection to the place and its people.

As the day draws to a close, you bid farewell to Materuni Village. The drive back to Moshi or Arusha is quiet and reflective, the golden light of late afternoon casting long shadows across the hills. You carry with you not just memories of waterfalls and coffee, but the warmth of a culture that welcomed you with open arms, leaving you with a day that feels both timeless and unforgettable.
