What you can expect

  • Take advantage of Fairbanks’ northern location and venture even farther north on an adventure to the Arctic Circle. Enjoy the scenery along the way, cross into the Arctic, and take in the breathtaking Northern Lights over the Yukon River.

Leave Fairbanks in the early afternoon with pickup from your hotel in a comfortable van. Travel along the James Dalton Highway, made famous by the TV series Ice Road Truckers, as you begin your 400-mile (644-km) round trip. Watch for moose, lynx, and fox along the way, and learn about the engineering of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline as you get an up-close look at this massive oil transportation system.

After approximately six hours of driving, arrive at the Arctic Circle. Pose for photos at the landmark sign and receive your souvenir certificate before beginning the journey back south. Cross the Yukon River and stop to stretch your legs along the banks of this historic waterway while watching for the Northern Lights dancing overhead.

Continue your journey south beneath the starlit sky before arriving back in Fairbanks in the early morning.
