What you can expect

Book a tour and create real impact with Pachamama Tours. We’re a locally owned team in Antigua, rated 4.9/5 on TripAdvisor (73 reviews) and proud Travelers’ Choice 2025 winners. Our signature Acatenango 2-Day Tour is 5.0/5 (21 reviews) and 100% recommended, and guests consistently highlight how safe, well-organized, and professional the experience feels—plus warm, cozy cabins and food prepared with real care. Every booking supports our local non profit and helps us keep doing things the right way: fair pay for our team and care for the families behind every tour. Volcano adventures, private transportation, or a custom itinerary—let’s build your Guatemala story.

Day 1 – The Ascent
Your journey starts early in Antigua. Meet your group at our office by 7:30 AM for a complete briefing on the route, weather, safety, and gear check. Then we drive 45–60 minutes to La Soledad, the starting point of the hike.

Faster Route: Private Shorter Path (Premium Access)

We now use a private shorter path (when conditions allow) that skips the most difficult section of the standard trail. Thanks to this upgraded route, the trek to basecamp is now about 4 to 4.5 hours total, giving you a smoother hike and much better timing. This is a major advantage because it means you arrive earlier, with more energy—so you can fully enjoy the optional Fuego hike, relax at camp, and still get proper rest for the sunrise summit.

Along the way, you’ll have scenic viewpoints, steady breaks, and a lunch stop surrounded by nature. As you gain altitude, the air gets colder and clearer—and you’ll start seeing Fuego Volcano erupting in the distance, sometimes with glowing lava bursts and ash clouds.

When you reach basecamp, settle into our new comfort wooden cabins—cozy, insulated, and built for warmth. Cabins include sleeping bags, and many feature glass doors, so you can watch the eruptions from inside. Each cabin accommodates up to 6 guests.

As night falls, gather around the fire for hot chocolate, good conversations, and a hearty hot dinner, while Fuego lights up the sky in the background.

Day 2 – Summit & Sunrise

At 4:00 AM, you’ll begin the final push to the summit with your guide. This section is steep but short, and the reward is beyond words: an incredible sunrise above the clouds, with panoramic views of Guatemala’s volcanic range. After spending time at the top, you’ll return to basecamp for a hot breakfast, then descend to La Soledad and arrive back in Antigua around 12:00 PM.

Sturdy hiking shoes or boots
Layered clothing (warm + breathable)
Warm hat & gloves
