What you can expect
Begin your tour with a visit to a local women-run craft center or artisan cooperative, such as a women’s weaving, embroidery, or basket-weaving cooperative around the Addis or Entoto slope area. Watch live demonstrations of traditional textiles, jewelry, or pottery, and have time to buy handmade souvenirs directly from the women artisans.
Next, visit the Tiglachin Monument (Derg Monument or “Martyrs’ Memorial”) on Gizhabe (Gyeshi) or Menelik II Avenue, which commemorates Ethiopian and allied soldiers. Enjoy a short guided reflection on the history and significance of the memorial, followed by time for photos and quiet observation.
Stop at a traditional café or coffee house in Addis, such as a place with live coffee-roasting and traditional ceremony, such as those near Merkato or Bole-Ras Mekonnen area. Watch the roasting of green coffee beans, learn the basic steps of the Ethiopian coffee ceremony, and enjoy three rounds of coffee (Abol, Tona, Baraka) with popcorn or small snacks.
Transfer to a reputable local restaurant serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine, such as a restaurant in the Bole or Piazza area that offers shared platters. Enjoy injera (sourdough flatbread) and a mix of vegetarian dishes (like shiro, misir wot, gomen, atkilt) and meat dishes (doro wat, tibs, kitfo) as you prefer. Try traditional honey wine (tej) or juice or a soft drink if you like.
