7 Days Northern Ethiopia Tour (Lalibela & Abune Yosef)

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and flight to Lalibela
Arrive in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, then connect to a domestic flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and begin exploring the famous rock-hewn churches. These UNESCO World Heritage sites are carved directly into volcanic rock and represent one of the world’s greatest religious and architectural achievements. Walk through narrow tunnels, courtyards, and ancient passageways while learning about their history and spiritual significance. Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 2: Lalibela Northern Cluster Churches
After breakfast, visit the northern group of churches including Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, and Bet Danagel. Bet Medhane Alem is considered the largest monolithic church in the world, while Bet Maryam is one of the most sacred and beautifully decorated. Continue exploring connected tunnels and rock corridors that link the churches. In the afternoon, visit the local market to experience daily life, traditional clothing, and handmade crafts. Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 3: Asheton Maryam & Nakuto La’ab
Hike up to Asheton Maryam Monastery, located on a mountain ridge with panoramic views of the highlands. Visit the monastery, which holds ancient crosses, manuscripts, and religious artifacts. After descending, continue to Nakuto La’ab Church, a cave church known for its sacred spring and peaceful atmosphere. Return to Lalibela for overnight stay.

Day 4: Yemrehanna Kristos Church
Drive through scenic mountains and rural villages to Yemrehanna Kristos Church. This unique church is built inside a cave using wood and stone in Axumite style architecture. Inside are ancient decorations, tombs, and religious treasures. Enjoy interaction with local villagers along the way. Return to Lalibela in the afternoon.

Day 5: Abune Yosef Mountain Trek
Full-day hike in the Abune Yosef mountains, one of Ethiopia’s best highland trekking areas. Walk through dramatic landscapes, grasslands, and remote villages. Spot Gelada baboons and highland birds while enjoying breathtaking views. Meet local shepherd communities and learn about traditional mountain life. Optional camping or return to Lalibela depending on arrangement.

Day 6: Cultural Village Experience
Visit nearby villages around Lalibela to experience rural Ethiopian life. Learn traditional farming, weaving, and crafts. Participate in a coffee ceremony, where beans are roasted and brewed in the traditional way. In the evening, enjoy cultural music and dance performances showcasing Ethiopian heritage. Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 7: Return to Addis Ababa
Transfer to the airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your schedule, enjoy a short city tour or souvenir shopping before international departure.
