What you can expect

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Lake Ziway – Abijata-Shalla National Park – Awassa

Begin your trip early in the morning, around 6:30 AM, to enjoy a full day of exploration. Take the scenic Addis Ababa–Awassa highway, passing through lush highlands and rural landscapes. Stop at Lake Ziway, a beautiful freshwater lake located 165 km south of Addis Ababa.

A paradise for bird watchers, the lake is home to pelicans, African fish eagles, herons, and more. Take a boat ride to Tulu Gudo Island, where you can meet the local Zay community and explore an ancient monastery that houses historical biblical manuscripts.

Drive 55 km south to reach the striking landscapes of Abijata-Shalla National Park. The park features two contrasting lakes: Lake Shalla is deep and dark blue, surrounded by volcanic cliffs, while Lake Abijata is shallow, attracting large flocks of flamingos. Visit the hot springs, known for their natural warmth and believed healing properties. Spot local wildlife such as gazelles, warthogs, and ostriches during a short trek.

Continue driving for another 80 km to reach Awassa, arriving around 4:00 PM. Check into your hotel and take a leisurely walk along the shores of Lake Awassa, a tranquil spot known for hippos and diverse bird species.

Visit the vibrant Awassa Fish Market, where you can see fresh catches and enjoy delicious grilled tilapia by the lake. Experience Sidama cuisine at a local restaurant. Overnight stay at a hotel in Awassa.

Day 2: Awassa – Wondo Genet – Addis Ababa

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Lake Awassa. Take a boat tour to spot hippos and appreciate the stunning morning scenery. Head to Wondo Genet, about 30 km from Awassa, a lush forest retreat with natural hot springs. Relax in the warm waters, which locals believe offer therapeutic benefits. Take a short forest hike, where you may encounter colobus monkeys and diverse plant species.

Have lunch in Shashamane, a town famous for its Rastafarian community. Start the return journey, retracing the scenic route back to Addis Ababa. Arrive in Addis Ababa by 6:00 PM, concluding an exciting and immersive two-day adventure.
