Day 1: Addis Ababa – Lake Ziway – Abijata-Shalla National Park – Awassa

Begin your trip early in the morning, around 6:30 AM, to enjoy a full day of exploration. Take the scenic Addis Ababa–Awassa highway, passing through lush highlands and rural landscapes. Stop at Lake Ziway, a beautiful freshwater lake located 165 km south of Addis Ababa.

A paradise for bird watchers, the lake is home to pelicans, African fish eagles, herons, and more. Take a boat ride to Tulu Gudo Island, where you can meet the local Zay community and explore an ancient monastery that houses historical biblical manuscripts.

Drive 55 km south to reach the striking landscapes of Abijata-Shalla National Park. The park features two contrasting lakes: Lake Shalla is deep and dark blue, surrounded by volcanic cliffs, while Lake Abijata is shallow, attracting large flocks of flamingos.
