The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. It houses the Palace Museum, and was the former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty (the years 1420 to 1912). The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

The Temple Of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven is located in southern Beijing and was first constructed in 1420. It was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would worship the god of heaven and pray for good harvest. Covering an area of 273 hectares, it is the largest architectural complex in the world for rituals to pay homage to heaven.
The structure of the Temple of Heaven is like that of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. Three Echo Stones is outside of the gate of Imperial Heavenly Vault. If you speak facing the vault while standing on the first stone, you will hear one echo; standing on the second and the third stone, you will hear two and three echoes respectively. Another site-of-interest is called Echo Wall. Its perimeter is 193 meters. If you and your friend stand at the east and the west roots of the wall respectively and you whisper a word, then your friend will hear clearly what you say. This phenomenon utilizes the theory of sound wave.

The hutongs are quite simply what differentiates Beijing from other Chinese cities. One could spend hours wandering these narrow tree-lined lanes, getting lost, meeting people, finding artsy cafes and boutiques. As elder locals sit outside their hutong homes playing Mahjong, or entertaining their grandchildren.
All around, bells are ringing as people of all ages zoom by on bicycles, interweaving their routes with delivery drivers on electric motorbikes.
