After a nourishing breakfast, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and enter the scenic moorland. The trail for Day 2 is roughly 5 kilometers, and as you climb, the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic views of Mount Meru and the surrounding plains. Shira Camp, perched at 3,800 meters, offers a stunning vantage point to soak in the beauty of the mountain’s wilderness.

This day focuses on acclimatization, as you ascend to the Lava Tower, a significant elevation gain that brings you to 4,600 meters. The terrain becomes more rugged as you hike through alpine desert. After reaching Lava Tower, you’ll descend gradually to Barranco Camp, sitting at around 3,960 meters. This day covers about 10 kilometers and plays a key role in preparing your body for the altitude.

The day starts with the thrilling challenge of climbing the Barranco Wall. Once you conquer this impressive feature, you’ll continue trekking across undulating terrain before heading to Barafu Camp, located at 4,600 meters. This is a shorter hike, around 7 kilometers, but it prepares you for the final ascent to the summit. Barafu Camp marks your last stop before your summit attempt, and the excitement builds as you prepare for the challenge ahead.

Summit day begins in the early hours, with a steep and demanding trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. You’ll reach the summit in time for a spectacular sunrise and celebrate your achievement at the top of Kilimanjaro. After soaking in the breathtaking views, you’ll begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, located at about 3,100 meters. The total distance for this day is around 18 kilometers, making it one of the most challenging yet rewarding days of the trek.

The final day takes you from Mweka Camp back down to Mweka Gate, descending through the lush rainforest zone. Covering about 10 kilometers, this descent allows you to reflect on your incredible journey. Once you arrive at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and bid farewell to your team of guides and porters, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure. The 6-day Machame Route is a challenging but rewarding trek that offers diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes, from rainforests to alpine deserts.
