In Dahar, history is everywhere. In each village, along the roads, the landscape is dotted with remains and curiosities dating from various eras.Over millions of years, erosion has created ravines, valleys and basins.Winds from the Sahara have deposited clayey sand there.By accumulating in the valleys, it has given this particular color to the region.The landscape sometimes seems lunar and we understand why it served as the setting for the film “Star Wars”.The local architecture, the ksour, the land transformation and water management techniques, local customs and traditions, have all resulted from the constant interactions,with the civilizations which crossed the region.
In the Dahar,Arab and Berber tribes have developed their own civilization with a rich social organization from which festivals and ceremonies still exist. Remarkable technology has been developed: sophisticated techniques for building cave dwellings, oil mills, irrigation engineering, elaborate craft techniques etc.
