Situated in southern Cairo on the east bank of the Nile, Old Cairo, or Misr Al-Qadima, dates back to the sixth century BC and encompasses the locations of several early Egyptian capitals, including Fustat. Transitioning into Islamic Cairo to the east, its core is Coptic Cairo, which is home to the ruins of a Roman fortress and a number of early medieval Coptic churches.
Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary)

Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), still in use today, is named for its location above the Water Gate of Roman Babylon. Steep stairs lead from the forecourt to a 19th-century façade topped with twin bell towers. Beyond this, a small inner courtyard is often filled with vendors selling taped liturgies and videos of the Coptic pope, Shenouda III. The interior of this church, dating back to the 9th century (some sources say the 7th century), has been renovated multiple times over the centuries. It features three barrel-vaulted aisles with wooden roofs. Ivory-inlaid screens conceal the three haikal (altar areas), while in front of them stands a fine pulpit, raised on 13 slender pillars symbolizing Christ and his disciples, which is used only on Palm Sunday. One of these pillars, darker than the rest, is said to represent Judas.
Synagogue Ben Ezra

The Ben Ezra Synagogue was originally a Christian place of worship known as El-Shamieen Church. According to legend, it was built on the very spot where Moses was discovered as a baby in his basket. However, when the Coptic Christians who owned the church could no longer afford the annual taxes imposed by the Muslim rulers, they were forced to sell it. In 882 AD, it was purchased by Abraham Ben Ezra for 20,000 dinars and converted into a Jewish synagogue. The synagogue became a prominent gathering place for North African Jews during major festivals, and famous rabbis visited to worship in Cairo. During a restoration in 1890, the most famous and diverse Geniza in the world was discovered in an empty space beneath the roof.
