Recently recognized as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, it has been located since its foundation in 1740 (18th century), it continues to be a place of worship and pilgrimage. It has paintings and frescoes of great relevance, as well as treasures of baroque sculpture and two oil paintings that compare the similarities between San Miguel de Allende and Jerusalem. The first banner of the War of Independence was taken from its main altar by Cura Hidalgo, a canvas of the Virgin of Guadalupe that is now exhibited in the National Museum.

San Miguel de Allende was the place of residence of Ignacio de Allende. Due to the importance of this leader, the Villa de San Miguel el Grande was renamed San Miguel de Allende.
