Our walking tour starts at the train station and goes from there into the Old Town. There, we will reach the Ilmenau River with the famous Stintmarkt pub strip, the Old Kaufhaus (merchant's hall) and the Old Crane. Continue past the Lüner Mühle and through the Wasserviertel district, with the Brausebrücke and Abtswasserkunst.
One of the highlights of our tour is then the market square with the Luna Fountain and the Town Hall, one of the most beautiful medieval town halls in Northern Germany. We will also take a look at the Town Hall Garden, a green oasis in the middle of the city. Near the Town Hall, there are other interesting buildings such as the City Library, the Heinrich Heine House, and the former City Palace.
Before we leave the city center, we will make a detour to St. Nikolai Church, a typical North German brick basilica. Then we will head to greener areas. First, we will make a detour to Kreidebergsee in the north of the city center and then walk through Liebesgrund, part of the old city wall, and then come to the former monastery quarter north of St. Michaelis Church, now the seat of the district administration.
Another highlight is climbing Kalkberg. Steps lead up to the summit plateau at a height of 56 m. From up there, we can enjoy a sweeping view over the city with its many church steeples.
On the way back, you will first go to St. Michaelis Church and then continue through the subsidence area, which is linked to former salt extraction. Finally, we arrive back in the Old Town. There, we follow Grapengießerstraße. It is a pedestrian zone with shops, restaurants and cafés in many attractive buildings.
Finally, we arrive at Platz am Sande, which is framed by numerous tall brick gabled houses from various eras. At its eastern end is the famous St. John's Church with its leaning tower.
The route now leads past the water tower with its old technology and past the Ratsmühle complex with the Ratswasserkunst (municipal waterworks). We will visit another green oasis, namely the Wandrahmpark, an arboretum, and then pass by the Museum Lüneburg. From there, head back to the train station.
