Meet your guide at Viyana Kahvesi in Sirkeci, near the Spice Market. The morning begins in the food streets around the bazaar, where spice shops, bakeries, sweet counters, and old neighbourhood eateries sit between the Golden Horn and the old city. Start with a few classic Istanbul bites, then sit down for a full Turkish breakfast: cheeses, olives, honey with kaymak, sucuklu yumurta, warm simit, and tulip glasses of çay. It is generous, local, and very different from a hotel buffet.
From there, walk to the ferry pier and cross the Bosphorus by public vapur. In about 20 minutes, watch the old city slip behind you as Kadıköy comes into view. On the Asian side, follow your guide through market streets where locals shop for fish, pickles, cheeses, börek, sweets, and daily groceries. Stop along the way for several tastings that may include lahmacun, midye dolma, beyran soup, seasonal market bites, or other local favourites chosen by your guide.
Then settle in for lunch in the Kadıköy/Moda area. One highlight is İskender kebab at a family-run kitchen, with a recipe dating back to 1867: thin slices of slow-roasted lamb over toasted pide, finished with tomato sauce, yogurt, and hot browned butter at the table. The exact route can vary, but the focus stays the same: family-run places, proper portions, and foods Istanbulites actually eat.
End with dessert, often including stretchy Turkish dondurma and pistachio baklava, before finishing at Kadıköy ferry pier. Your return ferry ticket is included, and your guide will help you choose the right boat back to Eminönü, Karaköy, Kabataş, or Beşiktaş.
