The tour starts in front of the current City Hall, located in the former convent buildings of the Abbaye aux Hommes, founded by William the Conqueror at the end of the 11th century. Often attacked, destroyed, and then rebuilt, Caen is today a true historical patchwork, where an 18th-century square adjoins medieval streets with traditional slate-fronted houses. The castle is another highlight of the tour; its fortified enclosure is one of the largest in Europe, and was very recently renovated for the millennium festivities. Depending on the package chosen and the day of the tour, we will visit at least one of the city's main religious monuments (Église Saint-Pierre, Église Saint-Jean, Abbaye aux Hommes and Abbaye aux Dames). Passing by the University and the Phoenix statue, which celebrates the city's rebirth after the 1944 bombings, we will return to the starting point via the Saint Julien ditches, the remains of the medieval city walls.
