What you can expect
Guests depart Arusha at 6am to visit Hadzabe and Datoga communities in the Lake Eyasi area. The Hadzabe have likely lived in this region for thousands of years with minimal changes to their way of life until recent times. This trip will allow visitors to discover some of the traditional aspects of their life and culture. On arrival at the village, you will be met by members of the community who will be your guides/hosts for the day. They will introduce you to the village elders and take you on a short tour of the village before heading out to the surrounding woodlands. As a nomadic people, they typically did not practice farming and agriculture, surviving primarily by hunting and foraging for food. During the trip you will get a glimpse into some of the typical elements of their hunter-gatherer lifestyle such as hunting with bows and arrows, foraging, harvesting wild honey, cleaning and skinning animals caught during hunting, making outdoor fires for cooking,, traditional plant remedies etc.
After a quick lunch you will proceed to a nearby Datoga village. The Datoga, also known as the Mang'ati in Swahili, are traditionally pastoralists, known for their cattle rearing and blacksmithing skills. Their livelihood revolves around herding livestock and crafting metal tools and jewelry. Visitors can observe traditional practices such as metalworking, beadwork, and leather crafting, gaining insight into the tribe's rich cultural heritage.
Overall, participating in this day trip provides a fascinating insight into cultures that have largely maintained their traditional way of life amidst modernization.
The tour ends at the village at 4pm.
