    The Upper Lakes (12 in total) lie on dolomite, an almost impermeable rock, while the Lower Lakes are located in a limestone gorge.

    At the end of the lake system is the park's highest waterfall, Veliki Slap, an impressive 62-meter-high waterfall. The water is crystal-clear and shimmers in hues ranging from emerald green to turquoise blue.

    The park is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site; this distinction recognizes the unique natural processes that gave rise to the distinctive travertine barriers.
