Datong Ancient City Wall represents exquisite ancient Chinese military architecture. It was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty by General Xu Da on the ruins of cities dating back to the Northern Wei, Liao and Jin dynasties. The square rampart extends 7.24 kilometres around the old town. Built of rammed earth covered with blue bricks, it features complete defensive facilities including city gates, watchtowers and barbicans.
