Activity itinerary

Godafoss

  • 45m
Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods,” is one of the most iconic waterfalls in North Iceland and a powerful start to the day. Its wide, horseshoe shape and steady flow create a striking and peaceful atmosphere at the same time. According to legend, this is where the lawspeaker Þorgeir threw pagan idols into the water after Iceland adopted Christianity over 1,000 years ago. Fed by water from the highlands and glaciers, the waterfall changes colour depending on the light - from deep blue tones to softer, milky hues. On clear days, a rainbow often forms above the falls, adding to the magic of the place.

Skutustaoagigar

  • 25m
A truly unique place on a global scale - pseudocraters like these exist in only a few locations in the world: here in North Iceland, in Hawaii, and even on Mars. They were formed when hot lava flowed into the lake, trapping water beneath the surface. As the water rapidly turned into steam, pressure built up until it exploded through the ground, creating these perfectly shaped crater-like formations. Today, the area feels calm and open, with wide views over Lake Mývatn - a peaceful contrast to the powerful forces that created it.

Dimmuborgir Lava Formations

  • 30m
Dimmuborgir, known as the “Dark Fortress,” is one of the most mysterious and imaginative landscapes in Iceland. This vast lava field is filled with dramatic rock formations that feel almost unreal. According to Icelandic folklore, this is home to trolls and the famous Yule Lads. As you walk through the area, the landscape begins to play with your imagination - shapes appear in the rocks, from faces to creatures, each formation telling its own quiet story.

Grjótagjá cave

  • 20m
Grjótagjá is a small lava cave that hides one of the most unexpected sights in North Iceland. From the outside, it looks simple - but stepping inside reveals something completely different. Inside the cave, you will find intensely blue geothermal water surrounded by dark volcanic rock, creating a striking contrast that feels almost unreal. Just outside, visible tectonic cracks mark the boundary between the North American and Eurasian plates - a place where the Earth is slowly pulling apart.

Dettifoss Waterfall

  • 1h
This is not just a drive to Dettifoss - I will take you into one of the most raw and powerful landscapes in North Iceland. We travel in a small group, which gives us flexibility and a more personal experience. I adjust the pace to the day, so we can really enjoy each stop without rushing. As we get closer to Dettifoss, you will hear it before you see it. The sound gets stronger with every step. Standing there, you can truly feel the power of one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls. On the way, we also visit Selfoss, and if time and conditions allow, I may show you additional spots that make this area even more special.

Namafjall Hverir

  • 25m
Hverir is one of the most raw and otherworldly landscapes in North Iceland, often compared to the surface of Mars. The ground is alive - steam rises from the earth, vents hiss, and mud pools bubble in shades of yellow, brown and deep red. The strong smell of sulfur is part of the experience, a reminder that this is an active geothermal area shaped by forces beneath your feet.

Akureyri (Pass by)

On the way back to Akureyri, you can relax and enjoy the ever-changing landscapes of North Iceland - wide open spaces, quiet valleys and the feeling of being far from everything.
