Begin your food walking tour with a mug of freshly cooked kedgeree ( a fabulous dish inspired by the Scottish regiments serving in India) made with smoked haddock and curried rice in the former ferry waiting room. Visit the Farmer’s Market for hand-crafted quiches such as smoked cheddar with caramelised onion and thyme which I paid with a beer from one of Leith’s newest breweries, Campervan’s Lost in Leith, located in a former bonded warehouse. We walk round the historic port and see remnants from the past; swivel and swing bridges, a whale harpoon - its thought the whalers brought back penguins from the Antarctic who are the ancestors of our present day penguins in Edinburgh Zoo.
Stop at a cool Spanish bar, housed in an old ship chandler’s, for sangria, aubergine crisps drizzled with honey, homemade pesto, Spanish olive oil, and sourdough bread. Finish your tour with afternoon tea, featuring warm scones, homemade raspberry jam, and clotted cream, served with tea blended in Leith. This tour is circular so there is time to return to the Market for local souvenir shopping or enjoy a scenic walk up the Water of Leith to the pretty village of Stockbridge. Or take a tram back to the centre - or just stay!
