    The Afonso Cerqueira F488 is a purpose-sunk Navy vessel, which means it was carefully prepared and placed to become a safe, eco-friendly artificial reef. This gives divers the chance to explore a clean, structurally intact wreck that was designed to be diveable — a rare opportunity.

  2. Depth Suitable for Many Divers
    Unlike many deep wrecks, this one lies between 12 to 30 meters, making it accessible for both Open Water (with supervision or deep experience) and Advanced divers. It’s a rare chance to dive a real wreck without needing tech-level certification.

Your trip begins at Azul Diving Madeira, after check-in and a quick equipment setup, you'll receive a detailed dive briefing from our experienced dive guides, covering safety, wreck layout, marine life, and conditions. Then we’ll head out by boat (just a short ride) to the Afonso Cerqueira wreck site, sitting at approximately 12 to 30 meters depth, making it suitable for Open Water and Advanced divers alike. The wreck, an old Portuguese Navy corvette intentionally sunk in 2018, now rests peacefully on the ocean floor and is home to a wide variety of marine life — including groupers, moray eels, octopus, and schools of barracuda. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the outside of the wreck with your guide, enjoying both the structure and the surrounding reef life. After surfacing, we return to the dive center, where you can rinse your gear and relax.
