Chania is the gorgeous town on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete, the second largest in the whole island. It is known for its 14th-century Venetian harbour, narrow streets and is a great place to start your tour. To the east, through the Chania regional unit, is the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, also known as the Asomatos Gorge, with huge canyons home to thousands of species of flora and fauna. At the bottom of the gorge is the lovely chapel of St George and the attractive springs of crystal clear water there. Close by is the holy Preveli Monastery, still in active use today, with a history of Ottoman resistance and a museum dedicated to the relics that are kept there. Head down to the Preveli beach to enjoy one of the most exclusive and romantic beaches on the island.
