  • Discover the secrets of Cartagena in an unforgettable walking tour through one of the most remarkable military fortresses ever built in the Western Hemisphere — the legendary Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the crown jewel of Spanish colonial defense in the Americas.

From the moment you approach its massive stone walls, the scale of the castle tells you everything: this was not built to impress — it was built to be impossible to defeat. And for the most part, it succeeded. Your guide will walk you through the full story of how this extraordinary fortress came to be, from its first construction in 1536 on the strategic hill of San Lázaro to its successive expansions over more than two centuries, each one driven by the constant threat of the most powerful naval forces in the world.

Step inside its legendary network of tunnels and hidden passageways — an underground labyrinth engineered with remarkable precision, designed to allow soldiers to move invisibly between positions, carry supplies under fire, and communicate across the fortress without ever exposing themselves to enemy attack. Walking through them today, the ingenuity of their construction is still breathtaking.

Your guide will bring to life the castle's most defining moments — none more dramatic than the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741, when British Admiral Edward Vernon arrived with one of the largest naval fleets ever assembled in the Atlantic: 186 ships and over 23,000 men, convinced that Cartagena would fall within days. What followed was one of the greatest military upsets in history. Under the command of Blas de Lezo — the one-eyed, one-armed, one-legged Spanish admiral who had already survived more battles than most soldiers ever see — the city held. Vernon was repelled. The British fleet retreated in humiliation. The castle had done its job.

But the 1741 battle was not the only test. You'll hear stories of French corsairs, English pirates, and the constant naval skirmishes that defined life in colonial Cartagena — a city so wealthy from the silver trade that it became the most coveted and most attacked port in the Americas. Every wall, every tunnel, and every cannon position in the castle was a direct response to a real threat, a real enemy, and a real battle.

Climb to the highest points of the fortress and take in breathtaking panoramic views of Cartagena's historic rooftops, the shimmering Caribbean Sea, and the modern city skyline beyond — a view that Spanish soldiers, pirates, and admirals all looked out upon, each for very different reasons.

By the end of the tour, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas will no longer be just a monument. It will be a story you lived from the inside.
