What you can expect

Book a tour with Pachamama Tours and create real impact while exploring Guatemala’s landscapes. We are a locally owned team in Antigua, rated 4.9/5 on TripAdvisor (73 reviews) and Travelers’ Choice 2025 winners. Our Acatenango 2-Day Tour is rated 5.0/5 with 21 reviews and is 100% recommended. Guests consistently highlight how safe, organized, and professional the experience feels, along with our warm cabins and food prepared with care. Every booking supports our local nonprofit and helps us do things the right way: fair pay for our team and care for the families behind every tour. Volcano adventures, private transportation, or a custom itinerary—we’re here to build your Guatemala story.

Day 1 – The Ascent

Meet your group at our office by 7:30 AM for a briefing on the route, weather, safety, and gear check. Then we drive 45–60 minutes to La Soledad, where the hike begins.

Faster Route: Private Shorter Path

When conditions allow, we use a private shorter path that skips the most difficult section of the standard trail. Thanks to this upgraded route, the trek to basecamp takes about 4 to 4.5 hours, giving you a smoother hike and better timing. This means you arrive earlier, with more energy, so you can enjoy the optional Fuego hike, relax at camp, and still get rest for summit morning.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy scenic viewpoints, breaks, and a lunch stop surrounded by nature. As you gain altitude, the air becomes colder and clearer, and you may begin to see Volcán de Fuego erupting in the distance, sometimes with glowing lava bursts and ash clouds.

At basecamp, settle into our wooden cabins—insulated and built for warmth. Cabins include sleeping bags, and many feature glass doors so you can watch eruptions from inside. Each cabin accommodates up to 8 guests. Upon arrival at basecamp, the group must provide 1 liter of water to the guide for warm drinks. As night falls, gather around the fire for hot chocolate and a hearty dinner while Fuego lights up the sky behind camp.

Day 2 – Summit & Sunrise

At 4:00 AM, you’ll begin the push to the summit. This section is steep but short, and the reward is unforgettable: a sunrise above the clouds with panoramic views of Guatemala’s volcanic range. After time at the top, you’ll return to basecamp for breakfast, then descend to La Soledad and arrive back in Antigua around 12:00 PM.

Please note that summit access depends on weather and safety conditions, so in some cases we may not go up. Because this is a collective tour, at least half of the group must agree to do the summit hike for it to take place. We cannot change this policy for individual guests. If you want to go to the summit regardless of how many other guests join, a private guide can be arranged for Q700.
