Art, history, nature and entertainment invite you to the ancient market town of Slagelse. Once the site of Viking activity and one of Denmark’s ring fortresses, Slagelse grew to become a flourishing trade center during the Middle Ages. Today it welcomes visitors in search of modern shopping experiences and beautiful landscapes on Zealand island.
In the town center, find squares framed by atmospheric cafés and streets lined with boutiques and brand-name stores. Slagelse Museum has re-creations of the town from different historical periods, including the time when Hans Christian Andersen lived here. Admire the town’s collection of architectural landmarks such as Slagelse Monastery. The 12th-century St. Peter’s Church blends Romanesque and Gothic designs. St. Michael’s Church is a redbrick Gothic building from the 1300s.
For art appreciation, visit the Kunstgalleriet to browse examples of modern Danish art, bronze sculptures and glasswork. Discover more art while wandering along the town’s laid-back streets. Among the public displays are Gerharn Henning’s Slagelse Girl and an unassuming stone sculpture of H.C. Andersen’s hat and stick.
Relax on the lawns of Slagelse Park, which also has a lake, children’s playground and summer concerts. Slagelse Lystskov is a forest set around Studentersø Lake, with trails suitable for biking and walking. Viking-era amusements, over 130 games from all corners of Europe and a traditional carnival present endless fun at Gerlev Legepark.
The Museum of the Viking is one of Denmark’s must-see attractions. Tour the ruins of the millennia-old Trelleborg ring castle and experience Viking life through a replica village and battle reenactments. See a collection of Cold War-era military vehicles, armory and uniforms at the Panzermuseum East.
Located in the western part of Zealand island, Slagelse is a 1-hour train ride from Copenhagen. The Great Belt Bridge provides road and rail links to Funen island. Choose Skælskør and Stillinge Strand for summer coastal retreats just a short drive from the town.
