Close to the airport
Lovely pool although no facilities around it such as towels or food/drink. Also an event was going on in a function room next to the pool which was very loud and involved lots of people walking near the pool some of whom were taking photos of hotel guests who were relaxing by the pool. Perhaps the hotel should think of a way of privatising the pool if they are going to hold functions for non-hotel guests. Otherwise, the room was basic but nice and the hotel is very close to the airport which makes it very convenient for early morning or late night flights. This means it is slightly further from the city centre but Vientiane is very small and so it is possible to walk into the centre in 10minutes.

Overall, it was probably more disappointing than terrible, but the cumulative effect of everything pushed it into the terrible category. Firstly, the room smelled like urine and was very musty and stale. Secondly, the food was awful! My wife ordered Tom Yum soup with prawns, which immediately made her sick with explosive diarrhea. I had the Cheeseburger with French Fries -- the fries were excellent, actually. The burger seemed to be made with old, borderline bad meat; although I thought I would definitely get a case of diarrhea, I didn't, just a very slight stomach ache. Thirdly, the bed is as hard as rocks -- terrible, terrible bed. Fourthly, the staff at the front desk neglected to give us our 5:00 a.m. wake-up call, although we had set a backup alarm and we woke up with plenty of time. The hotel has definitely seen better days and is in need of refurbishment and updating. For the price, not worth it!

Wonderful stay.
The Hotel was wonderful. We came in late after a 22 hour flight and they took us to our room very quickly with no delay. The bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked to perfection (key) and we slept wonderfully. The breakfast was very good and they took care of getting us back to the airport. We will definitely stay there again when we come to Ventiane.

Close to airport but needs refurbishment
Room was old and tired needing refurbishment. Bathroom was stained around bath and bed linen valance was stained.Furniture old and uncomfortable. Door and locks were not very strong and I wasn't convinced how secure it would be with a gentle push against the door. TV didn't work and it appeared not all electric sockets worked. Gym facility was old and agin needs refurbishment. Air conditioning in gym was not always working. Equipment (weights) old. Food and service of staff was good. Conference facility needed modernisation and air conditioning could not be adjusted. Nice to have cold air but not to the point of shivering. Lobby displays a 4 star sign but definitely not a 4 star hotel.

It was my first time staying at Mercure Vientiane. I don't really mind that the hotel is a bit old as long as it is clean and has a good service. There were a few things that made me very unhappy about my experience at this hotel. First of all, my room's door was able to be pushed in though it was locked so they had to give me a new room. Secondly, A shower tap was broken in my new room. Lastly I had to ask for an iron three times before they brought one for me.

Getting very old...
Way below any Mercure I've stayed at; the hotel is really showing its age and is in need of a complete renovation. Rooms are clean and comfy though signs of age everywhere. There is a brand new crowne plaza being built behind and mercure needs to seriously up their game. Pool area looks nice though no one (including me) used it. Staff is nice. It just feels like management has given up on this hotel...

Comfotable place to stay
Although a little well worn, the room was comfortable and clean, the shower and air conditioning worked well (considering that the daytime temperature outside was above 35deg C). Choices in the restaurant was limited but the food was reasonably priced and good. Location of hotel was a little far from town (difficult to walk especially in the heat) but can easily catch a cab (about 10,000kip per person) to drop off in town.

Hotel is convenient but needs renovations
This was a hotel where you walk into the room and think... "this doesn't look like it does in the pictures" or "the pictures were taken a few years ago". Absolutely not a 4 star hotel so manage your expectations. The gym was adequate. The pool was under construction which was a huge disappointment given that was one of the main reasons I selected it. Staff foreign language skills were low so it was difficult to communicate in English or French. It would take 3-4 people to get any questions answered. Wi-Fi was good. Decent conference space. Breakfast selection was good. Getting coffee refills was a bi challenging. It is located outside of the center but is a walkable distance and a nice stroll.

Hotel needs a spruce up.
Poor experience. The staff do not speak much English and it was impossible to communicate. They had little knowledge of the area and surrounds and provided poor recommendations. I was sick with Lao belly and had to go to a Dr And cancelled my bus trip to vang vieng. The hotel insisted on seeing my medical report to avoid cancellation fees which was fine but chasing it down repeatedly whilst I was sick was not on. Furthermore they questioned me on why I needed so many toilet rolls when I was obviously sick and needed it!! Totally Bad. Also the lift was not working for 4 days and we had to walk 3 flights every day. Then there was a blackout in the middle of the night and we woke up sweating and suffocating. It took them hours to get it back. Meanwhile totally sleepless night for us..

Short stay only
Staff does not accommodate "Western" travelers very well. The noise from people in the hall way was worse than traffic in a busy city. Voices carry directly into your room and doors can be heard opening and closing like an alarm. This is an okay place to stay for just a short time...as right next door in the alley is a night club that punished us every night with the loud music. We wanted to sleep more but ended up more tired than when we got there.

The hotel is a bit far away from the main activities. They do not offer a shuttle to town and you are left to take tuk tuk hawkers. Friendly staff with a convenient location.
We were at Mercure in the 2nd week of July 2014. We arrived early so while waiting, we requested for a massage and the hotel staff arranged for it promptly. On the first day, we took a tuk tuk to the city centre, however, we decided to explore Ventiane by foot and by bicycle after one of the staff showed us how convenient it was to get to the Nam Phu (city centre) area if we went by the riverfront route as opposed to using the main thoroughfare. We had a great time exploring Ventiane. We were also very impressed with the food and the ever friendly Lao people. The Lao people may be one of the poorest people in Asia but we certainly didn't see any unhappiness on their faces.

Horrible staff and service.
I'm not one to write a bad review over one bad staff, or one experience I may have had at a hotel, but the entire staff, and experience, was horrible for me and my partner. I've never felt so unwelcome in an establishment in my life. We are experienced travellers, that have travelled all over the world and you couldn't pay me to stay here again. On top of the rudeness displayed daily, our non smoking room and the halls in the hotel constantly reeked of cigertte smoke, and the plugs in the room failed to work. The pool was nice I guess? We spent some time there. But due to the constant conferences and meetings going on around that area, I felt very uncomfortable sunbathing while 30+ men were on breaks numerous times around the pool. I obviously would not recommend this hotel. Your money is best spent elsewhere.

Good value
A good value hotel about 15 minutes walk from the city centre, close to the Mekong and quite near the airport. Rooms are a good size, nice pool area and gym. Full range of services but decor now a bit tired, would benefit from a refurb. One small gripe, they don't make it clear on Hotel's.com whether or not the room rate includes breakfast. It doesn't, which is what we assumed but a bit more transparency wouldn't go amiss when you are trying to make price comparisions.
