See

Travel Guide

Cultivate your senses and skills as you join in outdoor adventures and culinary and live music events at this ancient village nestled at the entrance to the fertile Paznaun Valley.

Outdoor pursuits and cultural events meet breathtaking mountain scenery in See. Bike, hike and swim in summer. Ski, snowboard and toboggan in winter. Discover culinary walks, sample Tirolean food and attend mountaintop concerts.

See dates back to about A.D. 1400 A.D., when it was established by farmers. This pretty village is set amid the Paznaun Valley in Austria’s Western Tirol region. Walk its streets to spot an interesting collection of religious monuments. Admire work by revered sculptor Johann Ladner at Oberhaus Chapel and artist Matias Schmid at Habigen Chapel.

In the winter months See is a playground for lovers of snow sports. Ride the cable car to the See ski area, where about 62 acres (25 hectares) of skiable terrain awaits. Go alpine and nighttime skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing on well-groomed trails. Try tobogganing on a 3.7-mile (6-kilometre) long track.

If you are new to skiing then book some lessons with qualified instructors. Take advantage of the free Ski Bus, which travels between the Paznaun Valley ski areas and is available to anyone with a valid ski pass.

During the summer months, follow hiking and mountain-biking trails through forest-clad valleys and across rugged mountains. Walk to the hilltop Castle Wiesberg or visit the impressive Schaller Gorge. Have fun in the natural pools of Swimming Lake See and rejuvenate the body in the spas of Wellnesspark Medrigalm.

Consider purchasing a Silvretta Card to gain free summer access to cable cars, lifts and buses in the Paznaun Valley region.

See has a lively culinary and nightlife scene, which stretches from the village streets to the mountain. It’s part of July’s Culinary St. Jacob’s Way event, when celebrity chefs set up in restaurants accessible via marked walking routes. Come in August for Fest am Berg, a mountaintop festival of live music and street performers.

Reach See by public bus and train. It is about a 1-hour drive from Innsbruck. Experience more of Western Tirol’s natural beauty by renting a car and travelling along scenic roads.

OK Apartment, terrible service and absurd fees
"We booked the apartment for its proximity to Ischgl, since prices were a bit lower in Mathon (there's an excellent bus service connecting skiers to Ischgl from Mathon). The apartment was clean and comfortable, but lacking in basic amenities like hand soap! When we asked about hand soap, we were told ..."
