Ferry Beach State Park

Ferry Beach State Park featuring signage and forest scenes as well as a couple
Named after the ferry crossing at nearby Saco River, this quiet state park offers picnicking, hiking, swimming and more along its white sand beach.

Enjoy Maine’s great outdoors at Ferry Beach State Park, which stretches along scenic Saco Bay. In addition to its sweeping sandy beach, the 100-acre (40-hectare) park also contains nature trails, a picnic area and guided nature programs.

Stroll through the stand of tupelo trees, which are rarely found as far north as Maine. Spread out your towel and relax on the white sandy beach. Wade or swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Spot various bird species nesting in the dunes between the beach and the road.

Attend a guided nature program. These walks through the park cover topics such as coastal Maine’s plants and animals, the unique ecosystem of Ferry Beach State Park and the history of the area.

Explore the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) network of trails in the park. Follow the Tupelo Trail along a raised boardwalk through swamplands. The White Oak and Red Oak Trails snake through a deciduous forest of towering oaks. The short Greenbriar and Witchhazel Trails go through coniferous forests that remain lush in all seasons.

Have a meal outdoors at one of the many picnic tables in the parks. Take advantage of the grills and covered shelter. Ferry Beach State Park offers outdoor entertainment for any season. As the weather gets colder, shift from barefoot walks on the beach to cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

Ferry Beach State Park is open seasonally between April and October during daylight hours. Visitors are welcome in the off season, although its amenities are not open. Note that dogs are not permitted on the beach between April and September, although they are allowed in the park as long as they are leashed. Pay your park entrance at the entry booth or self-service payment station.

Find the park between Old Orchard Beach and Camp Ellis in Saco. It is conveniently located just off the main highway. Ferry Beach State Park is widely considered a calmer alternative to nearby Old Orchard Beach.
