The BELvue Museum was established in 1977 to document the political, military and royal history of this young country. It traces Belgium's past from its revolution, independence and years under King Leopold I, to the Nazi invasions during World War II. Its fresh and modern approach and engaging exhibits make it ideal for history buffs of all ages. The museum is named both for its country and for the Bellevue Hotel, the former name of the building in which it is located. An iconic 18th-century structure, the Bellevue Hotel housed members of the royal family and served for more than a century as a destination for visiting dignitaries. As you enter the museum, you'll notice the stunning internal features, which give you a sense of the grandeur and opulence of the former hotel. The exhibits progress in chronological order over three floors, giving you a fascinating overview of the country's history. One whole wing is dedicated to Belgium's constitutional monarchy, which has ruled the country since 1830.The museum is also home to a fantastic restaurant. The Green Kitchen focuses on fresh ingredients and produce and is the ideal place to refuel after exploring the museum. All products are sourced from a local farm and there's a combined entry ticket that gives you a discount off both your food and the admission price. You'll find the BELvue Museum in Brussels city centre. You can park in one of the paid car parks located nearby, or take the metro. Don't forget to check out the museum website for information about temporary exhibits, which tend to focus on Belgian history and democracy. The BELvue Museum is open every day except Monday, and charges a small entrance fee.
