What you can expect

Explore the mouth of the Chetco River as you head out from the town of Brookings by kayak with an experienced guide. Scope out sights known to be frequented by big-beaked pelicans and kingfishers, look for seals sunning on rocky shores, and learn more about the transition from fresh to salt water.

At the docks in Brookings, meet up with your guide and get set up with your kayak gear for the day. Slip on a cozy wetsuit sure to keep you warm, grab your paddle, and board your kayak at our easy to use paddle launch. Climb in and push off into the water, following your guide as they lead you through basic paddling techniques to help you maneuver through the calm water.

As you explore the Chetco River, look for pelicans fishing for their lunch, catch sight of colorful kingfishers in treetop perches, and chat with your guide about the area's ecology. Continue to the river's mouth and move into salt water to try and find seals sunning on wave-washed rocks, explore dramatic rock formations, and pass over thick beds of kelp before you head back to shore.
