Next time you come Down Under, consider skipping the city and jumping into a rental car straight out on these great day trips. Performers dressed in period costume man stores and roam the streets.<\/p>\n<p>Buy some traditionally made (on-site!) crafts, candles and kitchenware. Try your hand panning for some of the gold stuff; yes, you could still find flecks in the river!<\/p>\n<p><em>Get there: Ballarat is a 115km, 90-minute drive west of Melbourne.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mornington Peninsula<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.my\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Mornington-2.jpg\" alt=\"Mornington\" width=\"800\" height=\"528\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>Head south around the picturesque <strong>Port Phillip Bay<\/strong>, stopping en route at iconic beaches and the beachside town of Rosebud and Sorrento. At Shoreham, take your family through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashcombemaze.com.au\" target=\"_blank\">Ashcombe hedge maze<\/a> and the neighbouring lavender gardens. A growing number of microbreweries have also started operations, making for a fantastic day of wine\/beer sampling. Pick up a map of the region and just tick off the wineries you fancy. Start your day off with a bang with some bubbly at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chandon.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Domaine Chandon<\/a> and check out some contemporary art at the TarraWarra Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re travelling as a family, stop by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zoo.org.au\/healesville\" target=\"_blank\">Healesville Sanctuary<\/a> where you can feed wallabies and check out Australia\u2019s other native animals.<\/p>\n<p><em>Get there: The Yarra Valley is a 60km, 75-minute drive south of Melbourn<\/em>e.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Daylesford<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1997 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.my\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Daylesford-2.jpg\" alt=\"Daylesford\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s spa country out in Daylesford so book yourself in for a pampering treatment at one of the many, many spas here. For food, you can\u2019t go wrong with the award-winning food at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakehouse.com.au\">Lake House<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kazukis.com.au\/\">Kazuki\u2019s<\/a>. The former has cooking classes for those inspired by the cuisine and the latter rewards diners with an amazing blend of modern Australian and Japanese cooking techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Come on Sundays for a wander through the local market before jumping on a one-hour return train ride to Bullarto from the heritage-listed Daylesford railway station.<\/p>\n<p><em>Get there: Daylesford is a 113km, 90-minute drive northwest of Melbourne.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Geelong (and the Great Ocean Road)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1974 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.my\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/12-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"491\" \/>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>CC2.0 \/\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dittmars\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Victoria\u2019s most iconic drive is out past Geelong along the <strong>Great Ocean Road<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong is Victoria\u2019s second-largest city (after Melbourne) and itself worth a day trip out to. The regional <strong>Geelong Art Gallery<\/strong> has a great Australian collection and the waterfront is a pleasant spot for a stroll\u2026after lunching on fish and chips of course!<\/p>\n<p>From there, the scenic route begins, taking your along the coast through the coastal towns of Torquay (a popular surfing spot), Angelsea and Lorne before you hit <strong>the 12 Apostles<\/strong>. The apostles are towering rock stacks worn out from the waves crashing against the coastal face and actually number eight\u2026the others have crumbled over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Feel the wind in your face before climbing down the Gibson Steps to the beach for a different view of the coastal rock stacks.<\/p>\n<p><em>Get there: Geelong is a 75km, 70-minute drive southwest of Melbourne.
