The box-office queues can be horrendous, so skip them altogether to save precious time.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re heading to the zoo to celebrate a special occasion, book a spot on the guided\u00a0Wild Discoverer Tour<\/a>. Zipping around in a buggy like a VIP, you\u2019ll enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the way the zoo works. Book at least a week in advance to guarantee your slot.<\/p>\n

The gates open at 8:30am<\/span>, so be there on the dot. Get there any later and you\u2019ll be jostling with the hordes, making the visit much less magical. This is also the best way to beat the heat, as you\u2019ll be finishing up just as the midday sun starts to blaze.<\/p>\n

4) Zoo First, River After<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re also planning to visit River Safari next door, we highly recommend leaving it until after your zoo visit, as the safari is much smaller.<\/p>\n

5) Food in the Singapore Zoo<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

Missed breakfast in your rush to the zoo? Grab some grub at the restaurants and cafes at the main entrance; they\u2019re open from 8am.<\/p>\n

Alternatively,enjoy a\u00a0scrumptious\u00a0breakfast buffet<\/a>\u00a0at Ah Meng Restaurant<\/strong>, which is smack in the middle of the zoo. You\u2019ll revel in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dine with orangutans!<\/p>\n

Don’t worry if you get hungry during your visit. After all, visiting the zoo is a whole day affair. There are restaurants, cafes and food courts in there so you can always take a break for some makan before continuing. KFC is right at the end, where you can\u00a0munch away as the kids play in the little water park.<\/p>\n

6)\u00a0Rent a Wagon for the Kids<\/h3>\n

Children tire really quickly, so you might want to consider renting a small wagon (S$15), which comfortably seats up to two kids under the age of 5.<\/p>\n

7) Go Potty<\/h3>\n

The zoo has a limited number of toilets, so make sure the kids go before you begin your visit. It’s a pretty cool toilet, open air but well hidden with potted plants.<\/p>\n

8) Pack for the Weather in Singapore<\/h3>\n

The tropical climate can be unpredictable. Pack ponchos, raincoats or hoodies to keep you snug and dry when it rains. If you forget to take them, you can buy ponchos for S$5 each at the gift shops.<\/p>\n

9) Wear insect repellent<\/h3>\n

The mozzies are especially active in the mornings.<\/p>\n

There are various showtimes scheduled to introduce you to the animals in very entertaining performances. The kids will love these. Plan your route around the park to make it early to show time and get a seat.<\/p>\n

Once the doors open, head straight\u00a0for the otter<\/strong> enclosure at the start of Rainforest\u00a0Walk. These playful, energetic animals are sure to brighten your day! From there, go left, past the odd-looking Malayan tapirs<\/strong> and babirusas<\/strong>, and follow the signs to the\u00a0white tigers<\/strong>. These majestic beasts love to strut and show off their beautiful stripes while staring\u00a0menacingly\u00a0at visitors.<\/p>\n

Head north past Forest\u00a0Lodge, then stop to watch the\u00a0free-ranging orangutans<\/strong>\u00a0forage, sleep, play-fight and, yes, swing from tree to tree. As one\u00a0of the zoo\u2019s most popular exhibits, the open orangutan habitat is a must-see. Stroll along the elevated\u00a0boardwalk\u00a0for an uninterrupted 360-degree view of these fascinating apes.<\/p>\n

Continue north until you reach\u00a0Critters Longhouse, where you\u2019ll find a charming group of furry friends, including the leopard cat<\/strong>, mouse deer<\/strong> and various squirrels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

10:30am\u00a0– Splash Safari Show\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By this time, your feet are likely to be aching a bit, so make your way to the Shaw Foundation\u00a0Amphitheatre to take a break. At 10:30am, you can catch a\u00a0California sea lion<\/strong> showing off its swimming skills at the\u00a0Splash Safari Show.\u00a0If you fancy a quick cool-down, sit close to the stage and get\u00a0ready for a good soaking!<\/p>\n

Once the show\u2019s over, head for the\u00a0Primate Kingdom\u00a0to interact with troops of agile tree-dwellers.<\/p>\n

Next, move on to the much-vaunted\u00a0Elephants of Asia\u00a0exhibit, which is home to five mischievous female Asian elephants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

11:30am – Elephants Showtime<\/h3>\n

At 11:30am, grab a seat at the highly entertaining\u00a0Elephants at Work and Play Show<\/strong>\u00a0to see these fun-loving giants play dead, \u2018steal\u2019 food and, of course, spray water far and wide. The show ends with a\u00a0token feeding session, so stick around for that!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After you\u2019ve hung out with the elephants, backtrack a little to let the\u00a0Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia<\/strong>\u00a0transport you to the heart of Africa. Watch as more than 90 baboons<\/strong> scramble\u00a0up rock faces, pick fights and reprimand their young. Keep an eye out for the biggest baboon \u2013 he\u2019s the alpha male who controls the whole gang!<\/p>\n

Next, make your way to the Australian\u00a0Outback to meet the four cuddly\u00a0koala bears<\/strong>\u00a0that are on loan from Brisbane\u2019s Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary until the end of 2015.<\/p>\n

Lunch Time!\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You\u2019ll be feeling peckish by now, so tuck into your picnic lunch or stop at\u00a0Ah Meng\u00a0Restaurant<\/a>\u00a0for a bite to eat.<\/p>\n

AFTERNOON at the Zoo<\/span><\/h3>\n

Splash Around<\/h3>\n

When everyone in your party\u2019s feeling refreshed, it\u2019s time to treat the kids to a splash and slide at the\u00a0Wet Play Area<\/a>\u00a0at the back of\u00a0Rainforest Kidzworld\u00a0\u2013 an open play space featuring interactive exhibits, rides and a small petting zoo (with rabbits<\/strong>, goats<\/strong> and miniature\u00a0horses<\/strong>. Oh, my!).<\/p>\n

After enjoying some ice-cream and cold drinks at Kidzworld, walk south to\u00a0Fragile Forest, a rainforest\u00a0biodome where the little ones can get an up-close look at meek\u00a0mouse deer<\/strong>, slow sloths<\/strong>, beautiful butterflies<\/strong> and leaping lemurs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Memories of Africa<\/h3>\n

You\u2019ll\u00a0be on the last leg of your journey once you reach\u00a0Wild Africa, where you can marvel at majestic lions, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes\u00a0and white rhinos<\/strong>. But most kids seem to gravitate towards the meerkats<\/strong>, which keep darting in and out of their dens!<\/p>\n

Inuka<\/h3>\n

We\u2019ve saved the best for last! You\u2019ll meet the zoo\u2019s polar bear<\/strong>, Inuka, at\u00a0Frozen Tundra,\u00a0an enclosure designed to resemble\u00a0the Arctic region. While you\u2019re there, say hello to his neighbours, the wolverines\u00a0Boris and Ivana,\u00a0as well as Pom and Poko, two cute raccoon dogs from Japan.<\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s easy to get to the zoo from the Woodlands Checkpoint \u00ad\u2013 just drive for 10 minutes on the BKE. It\u2019s well signposted, so you won\u2019t get lost!<\/p>\n

From the city, you can take a taxi to Mandai or hop on public transport. Buses 927, 138 and 926 go right to the zoo. But the bus schedule is quite spaced out, so there’s a lot of waiting time. Which can be tricky when you have eager little kids still groggy from the early start. We definitely recommend taxis or Ubers.<\/p>\n
