Oslo Cathedral

Oslo Cathedral showing a church or cathedral and heritage architecture
Noted for its beauty inside and out, this 17th-century masterpiece is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

Towering majestically above the city skyline, Oslo Cathedral is one of the city’s architectural jewels. Dating back to the last decade of the 17th century, the building has been extended and remodelled through the years, including the addition of its iconic bronze neo-Gothic spire in the 1850s.

Inside, many of the original baroque features, including the vast altarpiece, remain resplendent with beautiful woodcarvings depicting Jesus with his disciples and the crucifixion. The pulpit and organ façade date from the same period and are similarly ornate. Behind the historic organ façade is a wonderful, new modern instrument, built by the famous Norwegian firm of Ryde & Berg and installed in 1990.

Cast your eyes upwards to the ceiling, which is lavishly decorated in all four of its vaults. Painted by the celebrated local artist Hugo Lous Mohr between 1936 and 1950, the vast murals depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The cathedral choir is also noted for its fine stained glass windows dating from the early part of the 20th century.

In the sacristy you will find portraits of former bishops of Oslo stretching back to the 16th century. The cathedral houses a valuable collection of artworks, many of which will be pointed out on a guided tour which lasts around an hour and can be booked in advance.

During the summer, the new organ is put through its paces by some of the country’s best musicians. The recitals are usually held at midday on Saturdays in July and August and tickets are available on the door. Check the cathedral website for full details of performances and programmes.

Oslo Cathedral is centrally situated on Stortorvet Square and is well served by public transport. It is open every day to visitors from mid-morning to mid-afternoon as well as for services at other times. On Fridays the cathedral remains open all night for silent prayer and contemplation. Admission is free although it is possible to make a voluntary donation to funds. Flash photography is not permitted inside the building.
