MuseumsQuartier

Museumsquartier featuring food and interior views
This cultural hotspot effortlessly blends classical architecture with a contemporary feel and lots of summertime festivals.

The MuseumsQuartier is home to an exciting mixture of modern art and the work of European masters. Over 70 attractions are housed here in the former grounds of the Habsburg Imperial stables, amid arts institutions, shops and numerous other facilities.Opened in 2001, the area is one of the largest cultural centres in the whole world, covering a massive 60,000 square metres. Known as “MQ”, it is a place of plentiful contrasts, with wonderful classical pieces to be found right beside the work of more recent artists such as Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. It is also home to an architecture centre, a dance hub and plenty more.Take in some wonderful Art Nouveau and Expressionist works at the Leopold Museum, and enjoy the largest single collection of Schiele’s work in the world. For a different view on the art world, visit the monolithic MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art), where Warhol and Picasso are among the artists on show. The Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna Art Gallery) combines fabulous built design with an intriguing collection, while the architecture museum is a must for anyone with a professional or hobbyist’s interest in design and style. The enormous central courtyard is the perfect place to relax with a coffee when you’ve finished your visit, or to take a break between captivating museums. Many of the city’s biggest and best cultural events take place here during the course of the warmer months, such as the Viennale film festival and the ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival. Street shows featuring bands, DJ sets and acrobatics frequently bring movement and colour to this busy area in the summer too.The MuseumsQuartier is close to the Imperial Palace, on the edge of the Old Town. It is easily walkable from the city centre, and there is also plenty of public transport. The central square and streets are open to the public, but there are different opening hours and fees for entry to the various attractions.
