About Kuala Kangsar

The royal town of Kuala Kangsar is in the province of Perak, in Peninsula Malaysia’s northwest. The current Sultan of Perak still resides in the city, which is one of the main reasons why this destination is so appealing to visitors. It was also the site of the first ever rubber tree plantation. Today, Malaysia is the largest exporter of rubber in the world thanks to Kuala Kangsar.

Don’t Miss

Sightseeing trips to the many royal and non-royal attractions in Kuala Kangsar are highly recommended. The beautiful palace of the Sultan, known as Istana Iskandariah, is often the first stop for tourists. It is a massive marble complex that cannot be missed. The iconic Clock Tower is a photogenic landmark, and the heritage-drenched railway station is one of the oldest in operation in Malaysia.

Natural attractions help lure outdoor enthusiasts to the city. The UluKenas Forest Reserve is only a short distance from Kuala Kangsar. Here, a beautiful waterfall provides the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic. Stalls are available on the weekends, but during the weekdays visitors need to bring their own packed picnic.

The city is located upon the Kangsar River, close to the Perak River. Exploring these waters by boat is a popular pastime for locals and visitors. Even ferry rides across the river are a great way to experience local culture. Plus, these rides are extremely cheap.

Restaurants and bars

Kuala Kangsar has a good selection of restaurants, which are both local establishments and internationally-influenced places to eat. There are several unique dishes for guests to try. Thelaksa here, like in other places around Malaysia, is different. The vermicelli is freshly made, rather than dried, so it tastes fresher and more unique. While in the city, tourists shouldn’t miss sampling the delicious masaklemakikanpatin dish. This local favourite features catfish cooked in herbed coconut milk. There isn’t much nightlife in Kuala Kangsar. However, there is a sports café and bar close to the bus terminal.

Shopping

Visitors will find plenty of souvenirs and other items at JalanTebing. This street boasts everything from handmade knives, through to locally-made mats, handicrafts and even fish traps. Along and around this street there are also many food vendors offering an assortment of memorable delicacies.
