Flinders Chase National Park

Flinders Chase National Park featuring a lighthouse and general coastal views
Experience the dramatic landscapes of Kangaroo Island when you see this national park’s fascinating rock formations, wild beaches and heritage-listed landmarks.

Flinders Chase National Park encompasses the westerly section of Kangaroo Island, where the rugged cliffs have been carved by endless crashing waves and sweeping winds. Explore tree-fringed gullies and eucalypt forests or trace the geological history of the coastline when you check out the natural formations of limestone, granite and magma. Visit the heritage lighthouse-keeper’s quarters and find out about the region’s maritime history.

A good place to begin your exploration of the national park is the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, located at Rocky River. This informative hub is great for learning about the trails, landmarks and highlights in the park and for discovering the different flora and fauna you might encounter on your travels.

One of the Flinders Chase highlights is the Remarkable Rocks, a magnificent natural formation on top of a granite outcrop. These rocks have been naturally sculpted by the elements on the windswept coast. See further geological wonders at Admiral’s Arch, located nearby the Cape du Couedic. You might also spy the resident colony of long-nosed fur seals basking on the rocks.

Visit the historic Cape Borda Light Station, perched on the high cliffs of the cape overlooking Investigator Strait. The station has a lighthouse and museum, which can be explored on an informative tour. Attend the midday tour to experience the daily cannon fire at the light station.

If you feel like a stroll, embark on one of several walking trails that traverse the park. Visit Black Swamp, Rocky River, Snake Lagoon or Weirs Cove on your hike. Committed hikers can take on the 5-day Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail for a more challenging experience of the island. Cape Borda and Cape du Couedic both have heritage-listed cottages available as accommodations on Kangaroo Island. There are several campgrounds dotted throughout the national park. Inquire at the visitor center to book campsites and obtain your national park pass.

Flinders Chase National Park is on Kangaroo Island’s southwestern edge. Reach the region by vehicular ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw and drive approximately 2 hours to reach the national park. You can also fly to the Kangaroo Island town of Kingscote from Adelaide.
