About Akihabara

Tokyo’s ‘Electric Town’, Akihabara is famous for its electronic stores and anime subculture. It is a colourful neighbourhood that sits in the eastern side of the city’s Chiyoda ward and is centred on Akihabara Station. There is a good selection of mid-range hotels options in the area, like the top rated Akihabara Washington Hotel and Remm Akihabara.

Don’t Miss

Shopping is the main reason why visitors come to Akihabara, though there are a few sights around that appeal to many travellers.

The Tokyo Animation Center is all about Japanimation, with information, drawings, showings and events all based on animation and gaming. The centre is located in the Akihabara Crossfield, a modern complex that is home to offices, conference space and showrooms all dedicated to anime and gaming.

Towers like Sega and Taito have entire floors where visitors can go and play shooting and fighting games, which are great for adults and children. The area also has a lot of maid cafés, where servers dress as French maids and will play video games with the customers, while also attending to their every need.

Restaurants and Bars

In addition to maid cafés, there are also plenty of other places to eat and drink in Akihabara, some of which are themed restaurants, like AKB48 Cafe and Shop and Gundam Café. For cheap eats, there are plenty of options near the railway tracks of Okachimachi Station. Many hotels in the area also have a restaurant on site.

Shopping

Shopping is what Akihabara is known for, with Yodobashi Camera, Radio Kaikan and Mandarake being the largest of the bunch. Electronics, anime, manga and figurines are the most popular items to buy in the area, though there are also shops that sell toys, clothing and other types of souvenirs. Don Quijote is a great place to buy discount goods, while Akky is best for duty-free items.
