Absolutely brilliant. The most peaceful place to stay with nature and wildlife right there on the doorstep. This is not a 5 star hotel with room service and in-house movies, this is a place to reconnect with your loved ones and the environment. No TV makes you talk to each other without any distractions. My wife and I laughed about how long it had been since we sat down and ate together with no background noise. We absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone that likes the simple things in life. Well worth the money!

Hi Dale, It is very unfortunate that you didn't appreciate our nature reserve. We realise its not for everyone. People that love nature, love Huon Bush Retreats, but you may be better suited to a city hotel. We try to keep the small skinks out out the tents but its not always possible. Cheers

An absolutely beautiful place , some 4 k up a very steep dirt road but we made it in our hired car. Huon is filled with wildlife and is an amazing place to stay. Take your own food and use their camp kitchen. Very comfortable beds and a fun outdoor bath with good hot water.

Beautiful setting in Tasmanian Temperate rainforest. The Teepee was a novel accommodation but very good. Table on the verandah (with roof) made for breakfast in the morning air, visited by wildlife ... The road to the Retreat was damaged by the heavy recent rains, but our little car managed the ruts and potholes on the 4.2km dirt road.

Beautiful caring for country walk with lots of really interesting information about the environment and first peoples. Hosts are super friendly and accommodating. The place was situated in a beautiful location with lots of options to explore its surroundings. It wasn't very clear on what we were booking so prior to arriving we imagined what we booked would look a lot different based on what we paid. It's quite expensive considering what we paid and what we got. Nonetheless the place was very clean and plenty of firewood to get you through a cold night.

Hi Natalie, thanks for your feedback, Michael and I have recently taken over the business, and would love to know more specifically what you imagined or would have liked. The main value from our perspective is that the cabins are in a private nature reserve, surrounded by 300 year old trees, an abundance of wildlife and serenity. Part of the cost goes to maintaining this and the 5km of walking trails available to you, cheers, Pamela and Michael

Wew stayed in TPWest, secluded surroundings, fire was alight before our arrival. the teepee itself is very cosy, with plenty of warm bedding and powered by solar. there is no food or beverages at the property so do sure you come self sustained. the wildlife are super tame and not shy! which was a lovely added concept for us, who are lovers of nature. the walking tracks are stunning and the keepers are hospitable and friendly.

An energy saving eco-resort!
It’s an eco-resort so electricity is very limited for each day’s use. One has to ration the use of power so such a practice can make things a little inconvenient during a vacation. The property manager was nonetheless very helpful to explain how things work around the resort so that we can be more prepared for the stay. There is a fireplace in the living room but its heating efficiency for the whole house is not high. You can find an outdoor tub which is really cool. Lots of wallabies around the area and one just chose to camp outside the entrance. Opt for this resort if you like to do your vacation the eco-style.

Hello Anonymous, Yes, as you say, "Opt for this resort if you like to do your vacation the eco-style." We pride ourselves on doing good for the natural environment, rather than consuming more resources than the planet can sustain. we are 3800t/a carbon POSITIVE. ie we take in more carbon than our entire operation puts out. Glad that you enjoyed having, "Lots of wallabies around the area ". Some people prefer that the wildlife they see is in cages, but we have created a protected habitat where the native animals can roam free in safety. Yes, "There is a fireplace in the living room ". This gives a lovely ambiance and is carbon neutral. You continue, "...but its heating efficiency for the whole house is not high". Your visit coincided with what the weather bureau is stating is " the coldest weather event in south east Australia for ten years". Thanks for your visit.

Winter trip
Welcome reception is excellent! A wonderful surprise awaits at check-in and trust me when I say that you'll love it. The retreat is excellent though not suitable for cold weather as there's no heater or inverter in rooms. Sleeping on the sofa by the fireplace in the living room was a cosy and you can stargaze at the same time. Possums came by. Not recommended to feed though they are quite cute and cuddly. Let the wildlife stay wild. Best place to see the stars, to chase the southern lights & if you are crazy like my travel mate: bathe in the outdoor tub during winter. Haha.

Hi Essec, Thanks for your visit and review. Glad that you liked meeting the native wildlife at Reception and at your cabin and that you enjoyed the spectacular night sky here. These things are only possible by being outside the town. We have created this private nature reserve to be carbon positive (we absorb more carbon than we release) This means that out heating is from a wood fired burner and we grow more wood than we burn, thus creating a carbon positive balance. Yes, to stay warm during winter, you need to keep the fire burning. Tasmania is a temperate climate, which means that it is cold with long nights in winter. This means snow capped mountains and spectacular stary skies and cold temperatures. This can be challenging for people from tropical regions who are used to consuming unlimited amounts of electricity sourced from polluting coal fired power stations such as is the case in your home of Singapore. Thanks Paul D

Stayed for one night with family visiting from the UK - wish we could have stayed longer. Paul was really welcoming and friendly and the cabin we had 'Wallaby Grasslands' was lovely. It was equipped with everything we needed. Plenty of space for 5 adults. Sitting on the deck cooking our BBQ for dinner, the cabin lived up to its name as all the wallabies came out. There were also a few possums around later that night which was awesome for our overseas visitors. The serenity there is awesome. I would highly recommend taking proper hiking shoes and supplies with you as the walking tracks available from the site are awesome. We weren't able to go too far on this trip due to time constraints, but can't wait to go back so we can explore further.

Hello Peter, Your dissatisfaction with the eco-facilities that we proudly provide for guests shows how important that it is to understand where you are booking and to read the information provided in the cabins. A "Bush Retreat" best suits people who appreciate nature. Our name and map location makes it very clear that we are a bush retreat, not a town centre motel. As such, our facilities are bush focused. We proudly offer peace and tranquility in a carbon positive nature reserve, immersed in protected forest, surrounded by wildlife. Our retreat suits people who want to engage with nature, enjoy our 5km of walking tracks, and relax in peace and quiet. Our eco-facilities include 12 volt solar electricity to operate the lights and music, dry composting toilets and wood fired heating. Hot water is limited by law to 50 degrees. Energy wastage is minimised and the information book in the cabins explains the operation of all facilities. Your comments when you arrived onsite, "I had no idea where I was booking" and "No, i didn't read, I just clicked the button" make it very clear that you chose us only on price, not for the outstanding nature experience that we offer. Guests who read to read information and operate the equipment accordingly, enjoy a relaxing stay, cozy fire and blissful bath under the stars.

Very quiet and eco friendly Bush retreat.
Steep and narrow single road access that would be a challenge for 2 wheel drive vehicles. Very quiet and secluded location with great views over the Huon Valley. No 240 volt power but this was not a problem for our short stay. Comfortable accomodation. Big comfy wood heater for the colder nights.

Hi Peter, Thanks for your visit and review. Glad that you enjoyed the "Bush location, quietness and views". Our end of valley tranquility is protected by the 4km of gravel road. This is part of being a "Bush Retreat". As you correctly point out, if we were on the high traffic bitumen road, this would "...change the secluded nature of the property." Our 12 volt solar electricity also has USB for phone charging. 240 volt electricity can be provided if required for special purposes. Thanks for adding the photos to this review. They clearly show our unique feature which is the secluded forest setting. Cheers Paul D

Off the beaten track (literally)
To say this property is off the beaten track is an understatement - the note that its on a narrow road that is steep in parts doesn't come close to it. The access in is over 4km of narrow, windy dirty road - with passing areas few and far between. The last 500m is so steep they provide instructions at the bottom to try and assist. Doing this with a rental car with an almost $10k excess on unsealed roads didn't make for a pleasant start to the stay. And this comes from someone who lives on a steep dirt road in outskirts of Melbourne! Unfortunately, this wasn't the end of the surprises - there was no flushing toilet or standard 240v power to charge or use appliances. You could charge your phone on a hardwired usb port - that turns off every 15mins - not overly convenient. Also the spa tub, at least for our cabin, was an outdoor bath. All things that didn't make the stay great when you have teenagers with you and haven't give them a heads up! The cabin requires some maintenance as the door and most of the fly wires needed some serious work to get them to close. Positives: The place itself is in a wonderful setting - very relaxing Had wallaby's all the way up to our door Cabin was really clean. Just wasn't what we were expecting....

Lets re-write this in a “glass half full“ perspective: - Huon Bush Retreats lives up to its name as a Bush Retreat. It is in a wonderful setting - very relaxing. Being at the end of 4km gravel road, there is no passing traffic. The owners understand that some people have no experience at driving on steep gravel roads, so provide driving instructions of how to arrive safe and happy. We wish that we better planned ahead and had rented a car that was allowed on gravel roads. Just a worry, not a real problem. - The no traffic location means peace and tranquillity. It also means that the wildlife is safe to roam freely without cages. We had wallaby's and possums all the way up to our door. At night, the possums climb the fly screens, creating a comical entertainment for the evening. Sometimes this puts small holes in the screens, but this is a minor issue compared to the value of seeing wildlife so close up. - This was a welcome “screen-free” escape. Instead of the teenagers staring at their screens all night, we borrowed some board games from Reception, went for long walks in the forest and had a family meal around the dinner table. There was a selection of books in the cabin, mostly nature focused. - The outdoor bath was a tranquil treat. No noisy motors like in a spa bath, meant that we had a romantic, peaceful interlude. Warm water, watching the stars and listening to the owls. Eco facilities include composting toilet, 12 volt solar power, chemical free water and carbon neutral wood fired heating. The fire added a lovely ambience. The kitchen has gas cooking appliances. We could charge our phones from the USB outlet. Timed to auto off after 1 hour, it gave us all the power we needed. - Many hotels pretend to be a “retreat” However Huon Bush Retreats is the first place we have stayed that really delivers on its promise.

G'Day Jen, Out tipees are a "Glamping" (glamorous camping) experience in a private nature reserve. They are timber and canvas construction, each in its own private clearing in our protected native forest. It is 1 minute walk to the camp kitchen, with full gas range and cooking equipment including kettle. Our end of valley privacy and tranquility is protected by 4km of winding gravel road. This means no passing traffic to disturb the serenity or kill the wildlife. We do have staff onsite, but as a "retreat", we try to leave you in peace as much as possible. Most guests love the feeling that they have the place entirely to themselves. We offer self checkin outside office hours so that you can arrive and depart anytime to suit yourself. Staff are available 24/7 for emergencies. Remember, we also have self contained cabins if you want a full bed and your own kitchen. Thanks for your visit. Paul D

As you discovered, being in a private clearing in our protected native forest, the tipees are a great way to get up close and personal with native wildlife. Hi Jo, As a sustainable nature retreat, we have chosen to provide 12 volt renewable electricity. We have chosen to be free of TV, instead encouraging guests to engage with nature and each other. Expedia does not provide any way for us to enter our own text. We only have ability to check boxes for ordinary facilities that typical hotels present. Expedia then creates text from our selections. They do not allow us to proudly state that we have solar electricity and are free of TV. Most of our guests choose us because of our eco-features, but for some guests, a standard hotel in the city is a better match for the guest requirements. Thanks for visiting

Bath not warm enough in winter
I went to this retreat hoping to have a lovely warm bath outside. According to hotel staff they cannot have water hot due to council regs so after spending about an hour filling the bath (you have to wait for hot water tank to heat twice!) I sat in tepid water in tassie winter wishing I was warmer. Perhaps if the bath had a lid to put over between filling it might stay warmer? Thankfully the fire place inside was well going when we arrived and the cabin was otherwise nice!

G'Day Leash, Unfortunately, health and safety laws prohibit us from having the water coming out of the tap hotter than 50 degrees. In the cold winter air, the water in the bath then looses heat to the surrounding air. Following the written instructions that we provide, will give the warmest bath that we are allowed to give you by law. I wish we were allowed to have 80 degree water like places built before the regulations, but sadly that is not the case. Most people who follow the instructions report that the resulting bath was lovely and warm. Glad that you enjoyed the rest of the facilities, including the cosy wood fire and wildlife. Thanks for your visit,

Nice Teepee. But everything appears tired
Difficult to find with GPS. Then nobody to orientate us to location of teepee. Left a map to ponder.

Hello Anonymous, Unfortunately, Apple based devices will send guests to the wrong road. We have tried to get this corrected but Apple will not change it. Android devices will bring guests direct to us.

Interesting
Should have a pitchure of the type of residence - teepee - you were getting. Thought it was a hotel of sorts. Especialy with the pitchures of a shallay on the discription.

G'Day Tarryn, We do have pictures of the teepees, both inside and outside. We also have pictures of our cabins, bushwalks, wildlife and forest. We do not promote ourselves as a "Hotel" We proudly call ourselves a "Bush Retreat". This is a place to relax, explore and experience nature. We understand that a bush retreat does not suit everyone. Some people are happier in the city. People who like nature and want to stay in eco-sensitive accommodation, will love Huon Bush Retreats.
