"Would definitely consider a stay here again"
We ended up having to stay at a Hyatt Place the night before because we needed an extra night up in LA, and at Hyatt Place the bed was more comfy and we enjoyed the free breakfast, plus it was half the price, but Avalon was still great. The room was great (a little dirty in the corners under the curtains and by the bed but definitely not bad at all). Wish there were more easily accessible outlets like we found at Hyatt Place (they're everywhere there!)... funny that otherwise we would have probably thought Avalon to be 5 stars but we ended up missing Hyatt Place a little that second night up in LA at half the price with free parking and breakfast. The staff at Avalon was AMAZING so they definitely deserve extra points there.

"As advertised"
I had reviewed hotels in the Venice Santa Monica area for months and settled on Jamacia Bay Inn because of the reviews, price, and location. Everything was as advertised. The staff couldn't have been more helpful from the valets and front desk to the restaurant and housekeeping staff. My flight from New York was canceled in the morning and I had to cancel my first nights reservation with only a twelve hour notice. The hotel did not charge me. Thank you Carlos! The restaurant was very nice. They seemed to be short staffed in the morning but I was in no hurry. My usual server Melanie was the best! Although I only had breakfast there every morning and lunch once the food was fresh and consistently good every day. A short walk to the beach every morning. My advice, rent the bike for a wonderful sunset ride up to Santa Monica. Awesome. Jamacia Bay I will be back

Visited Ocean View prior to renovation - and now after renovation. Stylish and extremely well done. View is the same, now enhanced by plantation shutters and room fittings. Joy in reception was welcoming and efficient.

"Love this hotel!"
Newly renovated room and very tastefully decorated however, I am still a fan of plush carpets in a hotel room (rather than timber floor) but that's just my preference. The staff here couldn't be more helpful. The pool bar is great for relaxing afternoon drinks in the sun and the hotel restaurants are great value too. Situated on the 'walk the fame' and across from the Chinese and Dolby Theatres, it's s great location for newbies to Hollywood. I would definitely stay here again.

    Pocket Guide: Los Angeles

Home to a bevy of superstars and wannabes, Los Angeles is a buzzing multicultural melting pot blessed by around 330 days of sunshine each year. Long regarded as the hub of modern cinema, the City of Angels plays host to the film industry's glitzy night of nights, the Academy Awards, each year at Hollywood's Kodak theater. From the iconic Hollywood sign to the Walk of Fame, there are countless camera opportunities to be had, as well as the chance to enjoy some star-spotting!

    On the big screen

Film buffs will appreciate a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the magic of the silver screen at Universal Studios Hollywood, and music fans should make a stop at Capitol Records' circular tower on Vine Street. The label's studios are renowned for their unique acoustic properties, and are the home of big-name artists such as the Beastie Boys, Frank Sinatra, and Lily Allen.

If the hype and glamour of Tinseltown gets to be a bit too much, take a break at one of Los Angeles' famous white sandy beaches. Stretching over 72 miles, there's something to suit every taste, from colorful Venice Beach to Malibu's epic surfing beaches. Or you could hire an open-top car and take the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica past LA's multi-million-dollar beachside mansions. This state highway offers one of America's best scenic drives, from wild coastal scrub to expansive beach views. And with a mild year-round Mediterranean climate, you'll find it easy to while away a lazy afternoon in the sun.

    Multicultural mode

As the second-largest city in the United States, and with more than 220 different languages spoken by its residents, Los Angeles has a truly diverse identity. Used as a backdrop to films including 'Rush Hour' and 'Lethal Weapon 4', Chinatown is the perfect place to catch an independent art exhibition or sit down to a Peking Duck.

Step back in time along Olvera Street, regarded as the birthplace of Los Angeles, where Mexican and Latino culture is kept alive with traditional market stalls and restaurants. Or check out the many clubs and karaoke bars (noraebangs) in Koreatown, well-known for its thriving nightlife.

    Rodeo Drive, baby

Of course, Los Angeles is all about retail therapy, and where better to indulge than in one of the city's legendary shopping enclaves. See and be seen along trendy Melrose Avenue, where big international designers vie for attention, or dig out some rare vintage finds on La Brea Avenue. For the ultimate in LA style, have your own 'Pretty Woman' moment on Rodeo Drive, where the rich and famous top up their Chanel, Gucci, and Cartier collections.

A city of style and opportunities, it's no wonder Los Angeles has long been a magnet for travellers and young hopefuls alike. With its mix of fame, glamour, and natural beauty, there's no doubt the magic of the City of Angels lives on.
