"Brilliant experience"
We stayed at the Shangri La Hotel at the Shard for one night last week. It was a celebration as it was our 25th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed every minute of it. Our room was fabulous and dinner amazing. Although the weather was a bit foggy we still had incredible views from our lovely bedroom and from the dining room. We were thoroughly spoiled by all the staff who were all extremely polite and helpful. They even left a beautiful bouquet in our room. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who feels like a special treat or for any other reason. I can't wait to visit again.

"A lovely hotel"
The staff at the hotel are all friendly & efficient-nothing was too much trouble. The room was large & the bed one of the most comfortable I've slept in. Only a couple of minor glitches: I would have liked some water in the room The bathroom waste bin had not been emptied from the previous guest

"Good location close to shops, restaurants and tube"
I booked this hotel based on the high rating on Expedia.ca. It is in a great spot, close to a lot of the shops and restaurants in Chelsea as well as a 7min walk to the South Kensington Tube station. The building is a old, converted police station, and for th most part has been well maintained. The rooms are fairly large for a London hotel. The rooms could use a bit of a freshening up, mostly with respect to the beds. Part way through my stay, I asked to change rooms due to an old, uncomfortable bed. The bed skirt in the first room didn't fully cover the box spring and the mattress and box spring were ancient looking. The mattress didn't feel any better, I could feel the springs and couldn't get a good night's sleep. After changing rooms, things unfortunately were no better. The bed had the same issues, and the shower leaked and the tile and trim around the bathroom door were damaged from the water. I was more accepting of these issues based on the price I paid, but had I booked directly through MyHotel, I would have paid nearly twice what I did, and I would have been furious.

"Seeing some more of the sights of London."
On the first night in the hotel, I ordered a round of drinks at the bar. When I then returned to the bar later in the evening for an other round of drinks the Barman enquired as to whether I wished the "same again - doubles". That comment led to a short discussion requiring clarification on his part that at no time during the ordering of the first round of drinks did I mention the words "make them doubles". The bar bill did show I had been charged for "doubles" but after further discussion this was amended to show the cost of "singles". Unfortunately, this incident left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. The term "rip off" easily came to mind. Breakfast time was really a bit of a lottery. Menu was very good but the system of pricing was unclear. Although individual dish prices were evident, when the bill was presented for signing on leaving the restaurant, it became apparent that no matter what the group I was with chose to eat, be it kippers or cereal, etc., each person at our table was charged £10.50. The restaurant staff were very polite and courteous but were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for this practice. The above experiences were, at the time, irksome, but I can assure you the general opinion of my group of friends was positive and would not hesitate to return. We commend the friendliness of staff and the excellent cleanliness of our accommodation. I look forward to booking with you next time I visit London.

    Pocket Guide: London

Enclosed by an orbital motorway, London is a mighty 620 square miles of metropolis which appears to have its own gravitational field, yet no single point of focus. Don't be daunted. It isn't necessary to introduce yourself to every inch of every borough to get to know England's capital, but instead it's important to embrace its diversity, from Big Ben to Brixton, and plan your journey well.

London eludes definition. A place of extremes and contradictions, it has transformed from robustly English capital to truly multicultural city. Having experienced Renaissance, revolution, and revival, and survived fire, plague, and war, the city has a pretty interesting history, the best of which it holds on to. Visit its monuments and museums and you'll come across ancient and modern London, and learn about its wealth, poverty, ambitions, reality, and make-believe. From the Tower of London to Buckingham Palace, the major monuments pull in the crowds, but make sure you take some time to explore its back alleys, quiet squares, and colorful markets.

    Art in the city

As red buses, black cabs, and pigeons encircle Trafalgar Square, there is no mistaking where you are. Stop by the National Gallery to look at some of the world's finest artworks, ranging from Leonardo's meticulous sketches to Turner's chromatic landscapes, or for a fix of modern art, visit the converted Bankside power station, the Tate Modern. The gallery covers art from 1900 to the present day, and its enormous Turbine Hall displays specially commissioned works.

    Razzmatazz and all that jazz

Finding entertainment in London is as easy as finding books in a library. In the West End theater district, you can choose from musicals, theater, and comedy shows. Based on the songs of the band Queen, We Will Rock You is currently showing at the Dominion theater. From April to October, you can see some of Shakespeare's greatest plays in the faithfully reconstructed Globe theater. It's no surprise that London attracts influential artists from all musical genres; and you can listen in pubs, theaters, basements, arenas, churches, and parks.

    Serious shopping and hearty meals

There's great shopping throughout the city. From high-end Harrods to cheap and cheerful Camden market, the city caters to every budget and taste. When it comes to food, the same rule applies, so whether you're after a comforting English breakfast, a reviving curry, or tea at the Ritz, you'll never run out of options.

The London Eye will give you a bird's-eye view of the river Thames looping through the capital, as well as the city's many parks. In a city of skyscrapers, buildings on top of buildings, and crowded public transport, London is thankfully protective of its beautiful green spaces. Find everything from rose garden to meadow and woodland in its eight Royal Parks, which offer free guided walks to explore the flora and fauna, and trace the city's royal, political, and literary associations.
